Safetytech Accelerator Announces Collaboration To Improve Real-Time Detection Of Potential Fires Below Deck And Selects Everactive’s Technology

Safetytech Accelerator announced a collaboration with Seaspan, and selects Everactive technology in a bid to improve real-time detection of potential fires below deck.

The challenge
Allianz predicted that fire and explosion are the biggest safety threats for the Marine and Shipping sector. This trend continues in an era when ships are larger and moving more containers than ever.

Most container ships use smoke detection systems where air is continuously sucked through pipes and directed to a detector in the below deck cargo hold. Once smoke reaches the detector, an alarm is triggered, and the pipes automatically release CO2.

The primary challenge is that it is slow – by the time the smoke reaches the detector the conditions are too hostile for crew to enter the hold. Secondly, spraying CO2 into the hatch may not actually be effective in tackling the fire within a container.

A possible solution
This possible solution could prevent potential fires by early detection of slight increases in a container’s temperature. This can enable smaller issues to be resolved before they become dangerous – providing cost savings and protecting people and assets.

Everactive – a technology company which produces category-defining batteryless and wireless sensors to generate a new class of data for the analytics of the future Industrial IoT, was chosen after a highly competitive Safetytech Accelerator selection process. Their solution is battery-less and always on, which enables dense wireless sensor networks that can continuously monitor cargo holds in order to detect fires before they can cause catastrophic damage.

Maurizio Pilu, Managing Director of Safetytech Accelerator had this to say about the collaboration:

“Battery-less sensor networks could disrupt safety and risk management shipping and other sectors, and fire detection is perhaps one of the most important applications. I’m delighted that we will be working with Seaspan and Everactive on this pilot.”

This pilot will benefit from support from Lloyd’s Register’s Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD analysis which will model airflow and help define the density and placement of sensors. Pilu added:
“The use of LR’s CDF for sensor planning is key for the success of this project and exemplifies the highly-specialized expertise Safetytech Accelerator can draw from when working on difficult technical challenges.”

Join Everactive At The VIATC 2021

Learn more about the benefits of wireless batteryless vibration monitoring during the Conference presentation and then visit our booth for a live demo!

The Vibration Institute’s Annual Training Conference (VIATC) is now partnered with the Society for Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT) Conference. Together, this is THE technical conference for vibration analyst professionals featuring dozens of case studies, in-depth advanced training, and a show floor packed with the latest technology.

We are very excited that Tom Ross, Everactive’s Application Engineer Manager, will be showcased at the Conference Program. Tom’s presentation “How Batteryless Sensors Unlock the True Potential of Wireless Vibration Monitoring” will discuss the limitations of battery-powered vibration sensors, the groundbreaking industry advances that have enabled completely self-powered sensors, and the benefits unlocked by this innovation.

We would like you to visit us at the VIATC in Arlington, TX from July 13th to the 16th and join Tom’s presentation to learn more about our Machine Health Monitoring (MHM) solution. Then stop by our booth number 15, where we will have a live demo of our MHM solution and Tom will be there to answer any of your questions.

See you in Texas!

David Wentzloff On The Digital Transformation Show Podcast

Bruce Sinclar discussion with David Wentzloff on “Self Powered Sensors That Never Run Out of Steam”

David Wentzloff co-founded Everactive in 2012 and is currently its co-CTO. He is also a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Faculty Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan.

In this episode, David and Bruce Sinclair discuss:

  • The numbers around university intellectual property transfer.
  • How to harvest enough energy through heat or light to eliminate batteries.
  • The opportunity to further improve on steam as an efficient method of energy transfer.
  • Use cases for steam (heat) powered sensors and the industries they operate in.
  • Case study that quantifies the cost and value created by monitoring steam traps which then enables us to compute a return on technology investment and the payback period.
