Everactive’s Batteryless Technology Will Influence 6G Roadmap Through Next G Alliance

SANTA CLARA, Calif., December 14th, 2021 — For the first time ever, ultra-low-power, self-sustaining (battery-free) technology in the form of active devices is being represented in planning the roadmap for 6G — Everactive, maker of self-powered IoT systems, has joined Next G Alliance, the group developing guidance for North America’s leadership in 6G.

With a strong emphasis on technology commercialization that encompasses the full lifecycle of research and development, manufacturing, standardization and market readiness, the Next G Alliance brings together important stakeholders from North American industry, academia and government to create a vision and roadmap for 6G, from research to realization.

“The Next G Alliance is shaping the future of the global mobile wireless ecosystem — 6G and beyond,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “We are pleased to have Everactive as a member, bringing its innovative ideas to our National 6G Roadmap Working Group. This Working Group is creating the 6G vision, mapping steps to achieve it and setting the stage to put North America at the forefront of wireless technology leadership for the next decade and beyond.”

While other companies have proposed “zero-power systems” similar to RFID tags in 5G and now 6G, the Everactive devices are active, not passive.  For the first time, this is a vision that could reach the full potential of the IoT – many hundreds of billions of devices connected over a future, worldwide 6G cellular network.

In addition to participation in the National 6G Roadmap Working Group, Everactive CTO and Co-founder Dr. David Wentzloff, also serves on also serves on four additional Next G Alliance working groups: Applications, Green G, Spectrum and Technology.

“As far as the future of cellular connectivity, we’re not just focusing on the needs of cell phones,” said Wentzloff, who is also a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at University of Michigan.  “We need to focus also on the needs of IoT devices to shape the future of batteryless devices to connect directly to cellular networks. As the global mindset evolves from making more energy, to using less energy and harnessing the energy all around us, we’re eager to bring the batteryless perspective to this important conversation and collaborate to help determine the future of 6G.”

Everactive Steam Trap Monitoring Trial at 3M’s Largest Manufacturing Site Wins DoE 2021 Better Project Award

The award was part of the Department of Energy – Better Plants Initiative.

One of the hallmarks of the Better Plants program is the recognition of achievements in innovation and energy management. The Better Project award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in implementing industrial energy, water, and waste projects at individual facilities.

3M Brookings is 3M’s first and largest health care products manufacturing facility. They have been in operation for over 45 years and many of the cross-cutting utility equipment and systems are original to the plant’s construction.

Because the site operates 24/7, steam trap checks are performed while equipment is running. Many of the plant’s steam traps are located behind security fencing that surrounds process equipment, so maintenance personnel need to fill out a bypass form to access them. A trap that is stuck in the open position blows steam constantly, creating energy losses in the system. Blocked traps that are stuck in the closed position can cause temperature control issues within the ovens and affect productivity.

With Everactive’s Steam Trap Monitoring (STM) system, the steam traps are monitored by a network of sensors that provide real-time data on the traps’ performance. The total annual savings seen with the monitoring system was estimated to be $32,000 for only 50 traps. 3M Brookings is looking at bringing another cohort of traps online and 3M corporate is currently investigating adopting Everactive’s technology for the remaining 7,600+ steam traps companywide.

IIoT in the Pharmaceutical Industry

What could the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) achieve for the pharmaceutical Industry? Everactive is working with one of the world’s top five drugmakers to find out.

When you think of the pharmaceutical industry, the first thing that comes to mind are new automated surgical techniques or life-savings drugs. We often don’t think about the factories that produces all these goods. And a critical component of pharmaceutical manufacturing is steam, with its ability to reach the extremely high standards of cleanliness to which drug production is naturally subject.

Our new industrial case study focuses on the pharmaceutical industry, and how Everactive’s Steam Trap Monitoring solution has enabled a Fortune 100 global pharmaceutical company to move from manual to real time steam trap monitoring resulting in significant energy and CO2 savings
