Everactive Achieves Class I Division 2 Certification for Batteryless Sensors

Today, Everactive announced it has received Class I Division 2 certification for its Eversensor, furthering the company’s ability to “collect data where others can’t.”

The Class I Division 2 certification confirms that Everactive’s sensors meet stringent requirements for installation in hazardous locations where explosion or fire hazards exist due to the presence of flammable liquids, gases or vapors. This milestone gives companies with tightly regulated operating environments, such as those in the chemical, oil and gas, and pharmaceutical industries, the opportunity to join other sectors in the deployment of IoT technologies—launching smart sensors to optimize production, decrease costs, and improve safety.

Everactive’s proprietary batteryless sensors are powered exclusively from miniscule amounts of harvested energy. For example, two degrees C temperature differences or 100 Lux (less than that of most dimly lit facilities) can generate all the power required for Everactive’s devices to measure, process, and wirelessly transmit data. The result is a suite of completely self-sustaining sensors that do not require batteries. No batteries mean no maintenance costs over the Eversensor’s guaranteed 20-year lifetime.

The first application of Everactive’s batteryless sensors is its Steam Trap Monitor (STM), a system that is designed to continuously analyze steam traps to deliver real-time failure alerts in order to reduce the steep energy costs associated with failed steam traps.

“We’re applying this technology to condition-based monitoring of assets like steam traps and pressure relief valves, and this year to rotating equipment, throughout a range of industrial environments,” said Shadi Hawawini, Vice President of Product Management at Everactive. “With this Class I Division 2 certification, we’re able to deliver our solutions to customers who are often unable to deploy this type of technology in their facilities due to the understandably high safety bar set in these environments.”

Everactive’s Eversensors are also IP66-rated for protection against dust and water ingress and feature reliable and wide temperature ranges for outdoor and indoor applications, down to -40⁰ F and up to 392° F.
