Doing More with Less

Achieve ESG goals in the most eco-friendly way—
using only micro renewable energy sources.

Everactive can operate without batteries due to groundbreaking advances in system-level energy efficiency.  This includes custom semiconductors and wireless networking, as well as advances throughout the entire technology stack to comprehensively control and manage the platform.  By lowering the power requirements by 1,000x compared to that of competing chipsets, we can both avoid the hazards of batteries and sustain our devices indefinitely using readily available harvested energy.  This means an explosion of new, high-value data streams using a tiny fraction of the energy required by competitors.  By relying only on “evergreen,” sustainable energy sources, Everactive’s platform lets users reap the benefits of large-scale connected technology while minimizing their environmental footprint.

Here’s a look at that extreme energy efficiency in action, showing just how much data our sustainable Eversensors have generated with minimal energy:

Eversensors have streamed 1.5B+ data points using the same amount of energy it takes to:

Pre-Heat Food for ~10 Minutes

in a household microwave

Run the AC for < 1 Hour

using a standard window unit

Brew 3 Pots of Coffee

in a standard drip coffee maker

Bake 2 Batches of Cookies

in a household oven

Make 3 Servings of Waffles

in a household waffle iron

With all that data at such a low energy cost, we’re focused on making a meaningful impact.

Decarbonization in Action:
Steam Trap Monitoring

Real-time insight lets users address failures quickly to
reduce excess CO2 emissions and energy waste.

The environmental and energy costs of failing steam traps has been well documented by the US Department of Energy, by leading steam trap expert Armstrong International, and by Everactive.  Our Steam Trap Monitoring (STM) solution offers a sustainable way to stop the waste—letting maintenance teams address trap failures as they occur in order to improve steam system efficiency and reduce energy use.  With increased efficiency, manufacturers and utilities teams burn less fuel, which drives significant reductions in CO2 emissions and energy costs.

To date, STM has contributed to our customers’ sustainability and energy goals.  For example, 3M estimates that it will save 100,000 tons in annual CO2 emissions and lower energy costs by 5% once STM is deployed across all of its US manufacturing sites.  One food & beverage customers has already realized an estimated 20,000 ton reduction in annual CO2 emissions.  At Everactive, helping our customers achieve their sustainability and CO2 reduction goals is a cornerstone of our product strategy.  Take a look at the impact we’re making so far with our existing customers:

Environmental & Social
Hazards of Batteries

Batteryless devices eliminate the dangers caused by
the large-scale production and disposal of batteries.

In addition to the sheer logistical impossibility and financial burden of batteries powering the large-scale IoT, batteries also introduce an unsustainable environmental cost.  If we imagine the trillion-sensor IoT long predicted by analysts and assigned each of those sensors a generous 10-year battery, we’d need to replace 274,000,000 batteries each and every day just to keep the network afloat.  With more realistic 3-year battery lifetimes, we’re looking at nearly 1 BILLION battery replacements per day (that’s 333,224,000,000 each year!).  This is not sustainable and would result in an environmental catastrophe—placing a severe strain on the planet’s limited natural resources and sending millions of tons of unrecycled material into the world’s landfills.

Mineral extraction for batteries leaves behind deep ecological and social scars

The mining processes for key battery elements—such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite—requires an inordinate amount of energy and water, while also often resulting in harmful chemical pollution to local environments.  Moreover, many of these mines are located in impoverished regions whose workers face unsafe, harsh conditions and whose local populations do not share evenly in the wealth distribution.  To rely on batteries for the large-scale IoT would severely exacerbate environmental and socioeconomic crises throughout the planet.

Disposal of battery waste yields environmental, health & safety dangers

Deemed hazardous waste by the EPA, lithium-ion batteries are “prone to combustion or explosion when they are damaged,” which usually occurs when not disposed of properly.  This is especially alarming considering that only about 5% of all lithium-ion batteries are recycled properly!  With a rapidly increasing number of lithium-ion batteries entering the system, municipal waste facilities have seen a sharp rise in dangerous and damaging battery fires.  The remainder of unrecycled batteries live out their days in landfills, where they continue to risk combustion as they seep toxic chemicals back into the atmosphere.  While improvements in recycling methods are on the rise, they will be hard-pressed to keep pace with the trillion-node IoT.

Everactive's Mission Statement

"Improving the quality and efficiency of peoples' lives ...

At Everactive, we develop and enable products that generate a measurable return to our customers.  Rather than develop technology for technology’s sake, we believe that it is critical to use our unique, scalable, self-powered sensor networks to solve meaningful problems.  While driven by financial results, our solutions also include compelling environmental and social components.  Real-time remote monitoring at massive scale offers the most sustainable way to improve efficiency, optimize the time of valuable personnel, conserve resources, reduce energy usage, and advance decarbonization initiatives.

... by enabling the next computing revolution with self-powered systems."

Everactive has dramatically lowered the power requirements of the electronics so much so that our devices can operate entirely off low levels of harvested energy.  With circuits that require up to 1,000x less power than competing solutions, we can use small form-factor energy harvesters to continuously and indefinitely operate wireless sensor devices.  This sustainable approach uses only scarce amounts of renewable energy sources to stream real-time data and unlock the insights that deliver customer returns—all without the environmental harm of widespread battery reliance.
