Hershey Testimonial

“If the IoT system required battery replacement, it is a failed system”

At one Hershey’s chocolate manufacturing plant, when Maintenance Manager Phil Reynolds suspected that the plant’s steam system was not operating as efficiently as it could be, he began to explore options to monitor the health of the plant’s steam traps. He soon discovered the limitations not only of manual audits, but also newer Internet of Things sensors that require wired power or batteries. Then, he discovered that Everactive’s batteryless sensors offer a better approach.

“STM is sustainable over time, gives us the best possible chance to catch failures and I’m excited about the long-term partnership.”

Click on the testimonial link above for the full story on Phil’s journey to optimize the plant’s steam system and what he learned along the way.

Everactive Targets Large Factory Steam Trap Predictive Maintenance with New Generation of Batteryless Wireless IoT System

Steam Trap Monitoring Solution (STM) Upgraded to New Platform; Now Offers Wireless Range of 250 Meters (820 Feet), Gateway Capacity of 1,000 Sensors and Per Sensor Installation Time of Less Than Five Minutes; STM Saves Money and Reduces Greenhouse Gases

Everactive’s STM is a unique batteryless IoT system for steam traps that involves batteryless Eversensors connecting to a wireless IoT gateway using the Evernet 2.0 wireless network.  With core advances in ultra-low-power electronics, system-level design, and wireless networking, Everactive makes it possible to continuously and indefinitely power Eversensors from harvested energy, thereby removing the need for batteries. Doing so enables Everactive customers to cost-effectively monitor industrial assets at scale.

Everactive’s new generation—based on its latest production chip technology—delivers wireless non-line-of-sight communication up to 250 meters (820 feet), or almost three football fields. This means complete coverage of a larger percentage of stream traps with far fewer gateways required throughout a facility. Everactive has increased the capacity of its IoT gateways to 1,000 Eversensors.

In addition to a much lighter footprint, the next-generation architecture also speeds up the installation process with a more fully integrated and sleeker mechanical design, as well as easier provisioning with an auto-pairing feature and QR code provisioning.  Taken together, a single STM Eversensor can be installed on a steam trap and setup in the cloud in less than five minutes.

Saving Money and Reducing Greenhouse Gases

Everactive’s new generation STM solution targets the tens of millions of steam traps used throughout critical process manufacturing, oil and gas, and district energy heating applications.  With real-time insights across an entire steam system, operations and maintenance personnel can address failures as they occur and bank significant energy and CO2 savings.

Everactive estimates that on an annual basis, worldwide real-time steam trap monitoring can save up to hundreds of millions of dollars in energy costs and reduce carbon emissions by well over 280 million tons—the equivalent of removing more than 60 million passenger cars from the road.

Since the launch of the original STM product, Everactive has seen strong and growing demand for the product with more than 4,000 STM Eversensors deployed.

“Our current steam trap monitoring solution is a unique product in the market, and we are experiencing explosive growth,” said Keal Harter, Director of Product Management at Everactive.  “With the adoption of steam trap monitoring sensors rapidly expanding, we’ve upgraded the STM product to our second-generation platform to better serve the market’s needs.  I’m really excited about the potential this unlocks to accelerate adoption and scale implementations at existing and new customers.”

The company’s customers include a long and diverse list of companies, including Colgate-Palmolive, Hershey’s, Merck, Mars, Morgan Stanley, National Institutes of Health, and the United States Air Force.

How Steam Trap Monitoring Can Help

Save Money, and Reduce Emissions in Your Facility

Have you recently experienced a steam hammer explosion resulting from a failed steam trap?

Did you know you could save THOUSANDS of dollars a year in energy cost by migrating from yearly inspections to real time steam trap monitoring?

Are COVID-19 access restrictions in your facility impacting your ability to implement your steam trap inspections routes?

Have you recently had to explain to your facility leader why the equipment you are monitoring failed, just after you completed your last monthly inspection, and why you didn’t catch the problem?

Do you want to expand the frequency of your steam trap inspections in your facility, but you don’t have enough resources to manually collect all the data? Or you are concerned that you cannot do it in a cost-effective way?

If you are experiencing one of these situations, Everactive’s wireless batteryless real time steam trap monitor solutions might help your facility  save money, and reduce its environmental impact.

Everactive Awarded Additional Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Contract, This Time to Identify the Next Batteryless Sensing IoT Applications for U.S. Air Force

1,200 of the Company’s Continuous Steam Trap Monitoring and Machine Health Monitoring Sensors Already Deployed at Hill Air Force Base

Everactive announced it has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract through AFWERX, the U.S. Air Force technology accelerator, to identify additional batteryless sensing applications for the U.S. Air Force.

The company is currently performing on a Phase II SBIR contract, validating its batteryless Steam Trap Monitoring and Machine Health Monitoring systems at Hill Air Force base. Everactive has already deployed its sensors to continuously monitor 650 steam traps and 550 rotating machines throughout the base, which covers one million acres with 1,700 facilities.

Building on the success of that contract, the company has entered a new Phase I SBIR contract to identify additional use cases, beyond steam traps and rotating machines, that will benefit from its batteryless technology, and where a compelling ROI can be demonstrated. Phase I represents this discovery process; Phase II would fund the development of the newly identified applications and their demonstration at an Air Force Base.

For depots like Hill, the Air Force is investing heavily in IoT technologies to provide better ways to manage systems and to orchestrate the data.  But, with a base the size of Hill, there is still a lot of machinery and infrastructure that does not have any data collection capabilities. To add battery-powered devices to monitor those assets would defeat the purpose, simply adding a new maintenance event: replacing sensor batteries.

Everactive sensors, though, are powered exclusively through low levels of harvested energy, eliminating batteries completely.  The wireless sensors transmit data continuously up to 250 meters to Everactive’s IoT gateways, and then onto the cloud, where the company analyzes the data to provide actionable insights to maintenance and reliability professionals.

“Without technology like Everactive, maintenance personnel must manually inspect systems, which is time intensive and may not occur often enough to identify issues prior to failure,” said Nickolas King, Base Energy Manager at Hill AFB. “Everactive’s ability to deliver real time monitoring and insights through a batteryless solution is compelling as it eliminates the maintenance and disposal of the batteries that would otherwise be required for a full scale deployment.”

“It is an honor to have been selected as part of the SBIR program, and especially the opportunity to continue with the U.S. Air Force to develop new, valuable applications using our batteryless technology,” said John Greenfield, Vice President of Business Development and Partnership at Everactive. “We believe our batteryless technology can provide the U.S. Air Force and other Department of Defense branches with significant cost savings, efficiency and valuable insights across maintenance processes and we are confident our technology will show that at the completion of the SBIR contracts.
